Boy Scout Helps To Save People From Burning Building
Nanticoke, Luzerne County - 13-year-old Jared Marshallick, a Boy Scout from Nanticoke, told Eyewitness News that he always wanted to be involved with the fire department.
On Sunday Marshallick got that chance.
Marshallick and his father were handing out flyers for the Boy Scouts when they noticed the apartment building at 176 East Green Street in Nanticoke was on fire.
"We were driving down the street and I (saw) some smoke and I said that's not good," Jared Marshallick, said.
Some Boy Scout training led the father and son duo into the building where they were able to help at least one family make it out alive.
"We went over and kicked the door in and we got everybody out," Frank Marshallick, said. "Neighbors were trying to get the dog on the leash but we told them to get out because the place was on fire."
"We got everyone out," Jared Marshallick said.
All of people, and dogs, made it out safely.
During the fire lames also spread to the neighboring home of Walter Dutter.
"I saw the windows cracking upstairs and everything," Dutter told Eyewitness News. "It was scary. I'm just glad I saw the smoke when I did. I heard the windows crack. I just figured I would get out of there."
Dutter and his wife also managed to escape unhurt.
Fire victims who remained on the scene couldn't believe what they were watching as firefighters tried to battle the smoke and flames.
Nanticoke Fire Chief, Kevin Hazleton, said they didn't have any major problems.
"Despite the freezing temperatures there wasn't any problems with the hydrants," Hazleton said. "Everything flowed well."
Hazleton said he believes the fire started on the first floor, but he said a State Police Fire Marshal was going to investigate the cause of the fire.
Hazleton also told Eyewitness News that the Red Cross is helping the people who were forced out of their homes.
